The Body

1. Specific Angle of cutbait lure (or Diving Mouth): This angle gives the Reel Keel a natural diving mouth so there is no plastic lip required. This flat plane also allows the water to push up against the lure to make Reel Keel swim. The flat angle causes the lure to dive downward in a gradual, smooth manner the diving action of a bait fish. The unique face lets the lure to perform a rolling motion as well as its side to side swimming motion to make it look like an injured bait fish. Speed changes will not affect the lures action because of this diving mouth.
2. Water Separator: This acts to separate the face of the cutbait Reel Keel so there is no pulsating action as the Reel Keel swims. The combination of the Specific Angle and the Water Separator forces the water to push the Reel Keel side to side creating a swimming motion instead of a vibrating motion.
3. Indented Eye: The eye of the Reel Keel is indented into the body so the sticker is always placed in exactly the same spot. The sticker of the eye is then sealed under a double coat of specialty gloss. This gloss seals our lure against anything and provides an extremely high shine.
4. Keel: The most unique feature of the Reel Keel lure is the brass double nickel plated ‘keel’ embedded into the resin fibre polymer body. This keel is exposed in the front to allow the line to be attached directly to the keel so when the fish hits, it is pulling on the metal-brass blade directly. This increases the hook-setting ability. Also, with the line directly attached to the keel (and because of the keel itself), the lure cannot spin. Since the lure cannot spin, the Reel Keel will never tangle your line. The lure is also kept upright because of the ballast at the bottom provided by the keel. the keel acts as a stablizer to allow enough proplsion of the tail in sync with a smooth side to side swmming motion that mimics live bait. The white underside (belly) and the keel provides a built in flash so no holographic tapes are needed.
5. Solid polymer body: The body of the lure is a solid resin fibre polymer material which allows the lure to stand up to anything you can throw at it. The shape of the lure is specifically designed to cast further and holds a specific gravity that allows it to float. The specific gravity is so exact; you can’t even feel it at the end of the line. This makes the strike response faster; you can feel even the slightest nibble on your line.
6. Kick Tail: This extra bit of keel at the back of the Reel Keel works with the Specific Angle (1) and Water Separator (2) to help the propulsion of the Reel Keel to create the life-like swimming action.
7. Treble Hook: We use Eagle Claw super sharp hooks. With the overall design of the body and the hook itself makes the Reel Keel virtually weedless.
The Angel of Incident and Depth Control
One of the truly innovative aspects of the Reel Keel lure is its ability to put depth control into the hands of the fisherman and all from a natural looking lure with no diving lip. The engineer designed face will automatically pull the lure below the surface and start performing its patented swim and roll movement all the way back to the boat.
Depth is a function of fishing line length and the Angle of Incident (AOI) at which the line comes into contact with the lure face. The higher the AOI, or the higher the rod tip, the more the lure will work right at the surface of the water and just inches below the surface. Simply put (as soon in the image below):
- The higher the rod tip, the higher the lure works in the water
- The lower the rod tip, the lower the lure works in the water
Attaching it to the Line
The best way to attach the Reel Keel to your line is with a good barrel swivel in the hole at the water separator (2). A six inch leader is suggested for most fish species while a 12 inch leader is suggested for muskie, pike, salmon and other big species of fish. Weights can be used with the Reel Keel but we don’t recommend them. However, one could use the dropsinker method or could attach an inline weight approximately 36 inches from the bait. Remember; let the bait do its job. Control of the rod tip, in other words, tipping the rod tip down will allow the lure to work at different depths. The length of the line will control the depth. For example: 30 feet of line with the rod tip down will have the lure diving to 22 feet. As you move the rod tip up, the lure moves up in proportion.
Casting
The Reel Keel is a casting dream. It has the ultra aerodynamics built in to allow you to cast with extreme accuracy and the ultimate distance. Reeling in slowly will allow the bait to work for surface fish. Reeling faster will allow it to work deeper. At any time, if you need, a slight jerk here or there just gives more excitement to the hungry predators below.
Trolling
Trolling with the Reel Keel is very easy and natural. On a slow troll, the lure stays near the top. You must remember that the majority of pike, muskie, walleye, and bass are caught within the first 10 feet of water. Again, more line out and rod tip down will allow you to go deeper.
The Reel Keel employs certain fishing mathematics. The depth of the Reel Keel in the water depends on the angle of your rod and the amount of line you have out. As previously mentioned, the more line out with the rod tip down means the deeper the Reel Keel will go.
Hook Set
Hook set is instant. Because of the swimming action, the Reel Keel has no weight when you’re pulling on it. Unlike a lure with a lip that pulsates, the Reel Keel does not pulsate because of the water separator (2) and the kick tail (6). Therefore, one can respond to the slightest nudge on the lure making hook set instantaneous. Remember that the Reel Keel is a slow rising body bait, so it does not just pop up to the surface.
Down Riggers
With downriggers, one can run approximately 20 foot of line off the downrigger. It has action as it moves toward the surface and during its ascent normally this is when the fish will strike.

The head
At rest the lure sits upright in the water. The weight of the keel prevents the lure from turning over. The angled cut bait effect creates a built in diving mouth.

Initiating Action in the Reel Keelâ„¢ Lure

- Pull the fishing line to initiate the momentum action of the custom fishing lure with the fishing rod.
- In the case of the new fishing lures face being pulled to the left, the right side has more surface space that meets the force of water and the front is pushed to the right as the tail is pushed to the left.
- The tails response to the frontal turn is to move in the opposite direction
In the case of the above diagram, the pull to the left allows more surface space on the right of the lure forcing it to move to the right. The line hole (part of the extension of the keel) is the center pivot point. Initiating a force to either the right or left of the pivot point creates the beginning of the action and momentum for the lure.
The reaction to forces place on the line

- Less surface space is avaliable for the force of water to push against when the lure turns.
- The opposite side then gains surface space.
- As motion allows more surface area to come into contact with force of water, it is forced backwards imparting a turning motion in the opposite direction. This produces the visual effect of a tail kicking.
Action entices predator fish
The kick of the tail has a wide range of motion. This motion will catch the eye of the predator fish enticing it to attack. This range of motion also increases vibration in the water alerting the predator fish to its presence. This is good especially in murky water.
The Rolling Effect

Push on the front (left) causes the tail to turn (right). As the fishing lure tail turns into the path of the water (“force”), the keel comes into contact with this force and is pushed back creating a rolling action.
C-Start Response Trigger

Water, Light and color

Water filters light and color. All color is visible in water down to 10 feet and then begins filtering. Some fish see color, some see only certain colors while others see only shades of gray. A contrast in color shades can be more important than the actual colors themselves.
A predator fish swimming below its prey will only see the belly of its prey. Looking up it will see a contrast of white against another darker shade which will outline the form of the bait.
Filtration of Color in Water
- 10 feet – red disappears, orange and yellow begin to fade.
- 35 feet – yellow and orange begin to disappear.
- 75 feet – only blue, violet and indigo are visible
